Follow our guidance for Arctic Grayling projects
Prior to construction of the 1967 W.A.C. Bennett Dam and creation of Williston Reservoir, Arctic grayling were widespread and abundant. Today, self-sustaining populations are limited, and in many flooded lower reaches, they are not present at all.
Arctic grayling is a focal priority species of conservation concern in our Peace Region. Actions #9 and #10 in our Rivers, Lakes and Reservoirs Action Plan relate to conducting research and monitoring and implementing high-priority habitat and species-based actions for Arctic grayling.
Grant applications for projects to conserve and enhance Arctic grayling in our Peace Region must align with Actions #9 and #10 in the Rivers, Lakes and Reservoirs Action Plan and any other annual regional guidance provided by the FWCP Peace board.
In 2026 we prepared a Synthesis of long-term learning for Arctic grayling recovery planning and a companion Summary document to support conservation and recovery planning. All Arctic grayling projects must align with the recommendations in this synthesis and summary document, which is an update to the 2017 Arctic Grayling Synthesis and Monitoring Framework.
Arctic Grayling Synthesis of long-term learning for Arctic grayling recovery planning: an updated compilation and analysis of Arctic grayling project results paired with a new framework for identifying opportunities for effective recovery action.
Arctic Grayling Summary document: a consolidated summary of the major findings and recommendations from the synthesis report to support grant applicants with understanding potential projects eligible for FWCP funding. It does not replace the synthesis document which should also be reviewed by grant applicants.

In 2017, we funded the development of a synthesis report and a monitoring framework that identified high-priority information gaps and monitoring needs related to Arctic grayling. These documents are no longer current. However, grant applicants may wish to review this background information.
