Riparian and Wetland Prioritization in Puntledge Watershed

This project will use science-based methods and local knowledge to identify and describe the current abundance, distribution and condition of wetlands and riparian areas in the Puntledge River Watershed, with the objective of identifying high conservation priorities. Methods include compilation of basin-wide data from local projects, GIS analysis and modelling, orthophoto interpretation, and field reconnaissance. Habitats will be classified as category one, two or three, and prioritized for conservation based on their ecological value and threats. The project is being led by a local conservancy in partnership with local First Nations, consultants and charities to guide selection of wetland and riparian habitat conservation while considering securement, enhancement, and restoration projects.

Species expected to benefit include several Red- and Blue-Listed ecosystems, plants and wildlife in the Puntledge Watershed, such as Morrison Creek Lamprey, Pacific Salmon, Red-Legged Frog, Roosevelt Elk, and others. The information gathered in the short-term will help guide conservation initiatives in the long-term. These conservation initiatives may include the conservation, enhancement, or restoration of ecosystems or target species-specific habitat types. The data collected will include information on the size, condition and landscape context of wetlands and riparian areas, threats, potential species or ecosystems at-risk, acquisition potential, and interests of other parties.
